</p><p>Er studierte an der <a href="University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill" title="University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill</a> und wurde 1981 an der <a href="University_of_Toronto" title="University of Toronto">University of Toronto</a> zum PhD promoviert. Sein Doktorvater war <a href="Endel_Tulving" title="Endel Tulving">Endel Tulving</a>.
